Dana Karni is an attorney in the Housing and Consumer Unit at Lone Star Legal Aid, the fourth largest legal services non-profit organization in the United States. With sixteen years' experience, Ms. Karni’s practice covers cases in Justice of the Peace courts, state civil courts, and includes federal civil district court litigation on behalf of her consumer and tenant clients. Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Ms. Karni has served as a member on the Texas Supreme Court subcommittees proposing language for emergency orders related to evictions, debt collection, and protection of stimulus payments as well as practical guidance issued to the Justices of the Peace. Furthermore, Ms. Karni is a founding member of a coalition of local eviction defense service providers who have been studying and exploring increasing access to justice, including via an eviction right-to-counsel initiative for Harris County. From her first year as a licensed attorney, Ms. Karni has been a member of the Houston Bar Association, the Texas Bar Consumer & Commercial Law section, and the National Association of Consumer Advocates. She is a frequent speaker at local and national continuing legal education courses, as well as a source to various news outlets throughout the country. When she is not advocating on behalf of her clients and their interests, Ms. Karni serves as a University Interscholastic League coach to elementary school children and is manager of Westbury Soccer Club’s U10 premier team.
